In Vedic astrology, a rashi (literally a "heap" or collection of stars) is one of twelve equal 30° segments of the sky through which the Sun, Moon and planets appear to travel. Each rashi acts like a coloured lens: a planet passing through it takes on that sign's element, mood and style of expression. Your birth chart is simply a snapshot of which planet stood in which rashi at the moment you were born.
Two things make the Vedic zodiac distinctive. First, it is sidereal — anchored to the actual star constellations rather than the seasons, which is why your Vedic sign is often one sign earlier than your Western one. Second, each rashi contains 2¼ nakshatras (lunar mansions — finer 13°20′ divisions of the sky), giving Jyotish (Vedic astrology, literally "the science of light") a far more detailed map than sun-sign columns suggest.

The four elements: Fire, Earth, Air & Water
The twelve signs divide into four tattvas (elements — the basic qualities of nature), three signs each. The element tells you a sign's fundamental temperament: how it takes in the world and how it responds.
Fire · Agni
Aries, Leo, Sagittarius. Energetic, direct and inspiring. Fire signs act first and reflect later; they bring courage, leadership and warmth, but can burn hot with impatience.
Earth · Prithvi
Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn. Practical, patient and result-oriented. Earth signs build slowly and durably — wealth, skills, institutions — but may resist change longer than they should.
Air · Vayu
Gemini, Libra, Aquarius. Intellectual, social and communicative. Air signs live through ideas, conversation and connection, though they can scatter their energy across too many interests.
Water · Jala
Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces. Emotional, intuitive and nurturing. Water signs feel their way through life and read people effortlessly, but tides of mood need a steady shore.

The three modalities: Chara, Sthira & Dvisvabhava
Cutting across the elements is a second grouping by modality — how a sign initiates, sustains or adapts. Every element contributes one sign to each modality, which is why the zodiac feels so evenly woven.

Element plus modality gives each sign a unique fingerprint. Aries and Leo are both Fire, but movable Aries ignites new ventures while fixed Leo sustains a kingdom. Cancer and Scorpio are both Water, yet movable Cancer seeks new shores to nurture while fixed Scorpio guards its depths.

What is my rashi in Vedic astrology?
Your rashi is the zodiac sign the Moon occupied at your birth, calculated sidereally. Because the Moon changes sign roughly every two and a quarter days, you need your birth date, time and place to find it — a date alone is not always enough.
Why is my Vedic sign different from my Western sign?
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons; Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the fixed stars. The two have drifted apart by nearly a full sign over the centuries, so many people find their Vedic Sun or Moon sign is one sign earlier than their Western one. Neither is "wrong" — they are different reference frames.
Which zodiac sign is the most powerful or luckiest?
None. Every sign has strengths and blind spots, and a sign's results depend entirely on the planets placed in it and the condition of its lord in your individual chart. A well-supported Pisces chart will outperform an afflicted Leo chart every time — the whole kundli matters, not the label.
Can my zodiac sign ever change?
No. Your Sun sign, Moon sign and Lagna are fixed by the sky at your birth moment. What changes are the transits — where the planets are now — and your dashas (planetary periods), which is why the same sign experiences different seasons of life at different times.
